Taking time out for yourself while handling the issues of others in your home

Although there are many good moments in life, you also need to be prepared for some emotional situations. If you have children, they might not always understand how to cope with these ups and downs and can sometimes try to shy away from the issue. As you try to navigate life, it’s important to try to take time for yourself so that you can be healthy mentally and physically for your family.

If you’re like most parents, you’re usually more concerned about the well-being of your children and other family members instead of your own. This can sometimes mean letting your health go on a back burner or feeling guilty about spending so much time worrying about situations that you might not be able to control all the time. One way to begin coping with life’s events is by admitting that it’s alright to spend time alone and that you have feelings that need to be acknowledged just as everyone else has feelings. Try to do something to show yourself that you deserve to be happy. It could be something as simple as taking a relaxing bath in the evening with a few candles.

When you listen to your children argue, you might feel like you’re head is pounding while still wanting to intervene to make sure they solve the problem in a healthy way instead of continuing to fight all the time. Let your children know that you need to take a few minutes to calm down at the end of a long day but that you’re going to always be there to help them with any issue that they have. If you don’t take the time to care for your own ups and downs, then you likely won’t be able to offer the best advice or support for anyone else.

Talk to your children about the things that are making you feel stressed if they are old enough to understand. If your children are younger, then explain to them that you need to take a timeout because you feel tired. Sometimes, your children might feel like they are at the center of why you feel stressed all the time. Assure them that they aren’t always the reason but that some of their actions might not be the best choices that they can make. Find out what’s bothering your children. Sometimes, it could be something as simple as wanting to spend time alone with you so that you can talk about events in life. Make a list of rules for the house so that children clearly understand what is expected of them. This can often make it a bit easier to maintain structure in your home and can make it easier to to deal with the events in life in a positive manner.
