Should you fill your pool with alcohol?

Should you fill your pool with alcohol?

The lifestyles of the rich and famous often leave us ordinary people in awe and wonder. What do the people with millions to burn do with all that money. Do they still order toilet paper in bulk to save a few dollars or do they buy single rolls of the highest quality? When it comes to partying we often hear stories of how crazy the spending gets, whether it is hiring private jets to take them to a different party on the other side of the world, hiring famous artists to sing, or indulging in strange and wonderful treats like Ferrero Roche mountains or pools filled with champagne. This last one really got us wondering. Filling a bath or pool with alcohol sounds great but we wanted to know if it really is all the fun they say and if any celebrities have ever actually done it. We decided to dig a little deeper.

There are often stories of incredible clandestine parties where the rich and famous wear masks and cloaks and get up to strange activities. When these parties are reported there often features a line about a pool filled with alcohol. It got us wondering just how much that would cost, and why would you even want to do it? Before we get into the price let’s talk about the attraction.

Have a pool filled with champagne could be cool. We can imagine taking our glass and dipping it into the pool for a top-up. But all that stagnant Champagne out in the open wouldn’t be very nice for long. I think I would try and get my refill from the bottle to avoid whatever other materials have made it into the pool. The same would be true no matter what liquid you put in. That means that this idea really is not for consumption but purely for spectacle. The spectacle would wear thin pretty quickly too.

You couldn’t go swimming in alcohol either. As it is denser than water swimming would get tiring pretty quick as there would no buoyancy. You may not be worried about that but it would soon become a problem when you became drunk off the fumes. Yes even if you didn’t drink the alcohol you would soon become very drunk from the fumes emanating from the alcohol itself. This level of drunk would be close to suffocation because when you are drinking too much and feeling drunk, you stop drinking. However, if you were in the middle of the pool you would have no escape. The fumes would go straight into your alcohol too so it could all happen very quickly. That would make it a cheap night for you but we are guessing if you are attending a party like this, money is not the issue.

Finally, there is the price. Pools are massive. Filling a pool with water isn’t even that cheap so the idea of filling it with alcohol is incredibly expensive. An Olympic sized swimming pool requires about 2.5 million liters of liquid to fill it. The average backyard pool would be about half of that. If you were to fill that with beer you would need around 20,000 kegs to fill the backyard pool which would cost nearly $4,000,000 in total. When you are spending that amount you would likely get a discount so let’s call it $3 million. That is a lot of money just to fill your pool with brown liquid. For the same price, you could probably fly everyone in your party to Italy for pizza – something they would all enjoy much more.

Filling your pool with alcohol may sound like the practice of the rich and famous but we doubt anyone has ever actually gone to such a silly expense and those that have, have surely regretted it. They either spent money on nothing or got so drunk on fumes they passed out in a pool of regret. If you become a billionaire – we suggest you skip this idea.
